Braverman Gets Spot in U.S. Open Qualifying Draw

Newport Beach’s Brandis Braverman was given a wild-card entry into the qualifying draw of the U.S. Open, the USTA announced Monday. Braverman, 19, is ranked 296th and will play 15th-seeded Anca Barna today. The qualifying continues through Saturday in Flushing Meadows, N.Y.

Fullerton’s Kevin Kim reached the main draw of the Hamlet Cup in Commack, N.Y. with a victory over 70th-ranked Mariano Puerta in the last round of qualifying. Kim, ranked 256th, won when Puerta retired with a stomach injury with Kim leading, 6-5, in the first set. Kim, 21, will play 75th-ranked Daniel Vacek of Czechoslovakia tonight.

COMMUNITY COLLEGES

Albert Gasparian, the Golden West women’s volleyball coach, will also serve as the college’s athletic director, Golden West President Ken Yglesias announced.

Gasparian, who served as athletic director on an interim basis during the 1993-94 academic year, replaces Tom Hermstad, who decided to return to coaching water polo as an assistant and teaching.

The Golden West women’s volleyball team has won 10 state championships, including the last six in a row, and 15 conference titles under Gasparian.

WRESTLING

T.J. Hill, who will wrestle for Cal State Fullerton in the upcoming season, finished first in the 110-pound division at the World Junior Wrestling Championships in Sydney, Australia. Hill won more open, high school and junior titles than any American last season.
