Re “Lawsuit Challenges L.A. Restrictions on Liquor Ads,” Aug. 24: Bravo to the coalition that is challenging Los Angeles’ ban on alcohol advertising. The ordinance passed by the City Council is another prime example of overreaching by a legislative body to censor and suppress speech about legal products. Councilman Mike Feuer should know that the city cannot, under the legal tests mandated by the United States and California constitutions, pass laws to ban commercial messages directed to adult consumers.

The council needs to wake up and recognize that kids don’t start drinking because they see a billboard or a sign in a shop window that advertises liquor. They start drinking because of peer pressure. To totally wipe out advertising of a legal product based on a very specious theory is more a political action than a health-related action.
