Newhall Market Slaying Suspects Plead Not Guilty
A security guard and his alleged accomplice pleaded not guilty Tuesday to charges of murdering a Newhall market supervisor during a robbery in October, according to the Los Angeles County district attorney’s office.
Vincente Godoy, 27, and Carmelo Corado, 40, and their public defenders appeared Tuesday at San Fernando Municipal Court.
The Canyon Country men are accused of fatally shooting store supervisor Luis Valdez, 32, and injuring assistant manager Teresa Cano during the Oct. 30 holdup of Tresierras Market shortly after closing. About $4,200 was taken, police said.
According to a Sheriff’s Department spokesman, Godoy had been working as a security guard at the market at the time of the robbery.
Each man has been charged with two counts of robbery and one count of murder with special circumstances, making them eligible for the death penalty if convicted.
Their preliminary hearing is scheduled for Jan. 25.
