The Streak Might Be Over, but Rivalry Will Never End

Share

While reading Viewpoint last week, I was surprised to see the word “inconsequential” used at least twice by USC loyalists in describing Kareem Kelly’s touchdown against UCLA. The word must be fresh in their minds, since it has been the most frequently used adjective to describe the Trojan football program over the last decade.

In response to several of your Bruin readers who wrote in, the celebration at the end of the game was just what it was, the Trojans just beat their archrivals after a long and miserable eight years. As a Trojan, I can understand the frustration Bruin fans felt. They would be celebrating in the same manner if the scoreboard was in their favor, miserable season or not.

It must be really frustrating if you’re a UCLA fan. Your glorious streak, which produced no Rose Bowl victories or national championships, is over. Now, all you can do is complain about the way SC and its fans celebrated after the game. Is there anything more pathetic than that?

I made the grave error of congratulating a Trojan fan about their win over UCLA. Within two minutes this disgruntled fan mentioned “eight national championships and four Heisman Trophy winners.”

In light of their inability to lose with grace and win with pride, I am introducing the ultimate “Trojan Football Belated Victory Card.”

On the front: “I know I am late but . . . “

On the inside: “Congratulations on your 19-- (fill in the year) national championship!! Your team was No. 1 . . . sorry I missed it (hee hee).”

On the back: A list of all their championship seasons and Heisman winners.

As you open the card, you’ll hear the sound of a horse galloping . . . and tripping.

University of California Los Angeles? I think not. More like University of Crybabies, Losers and Alibis.

I was really worried. Louisiana Tech had USC right where it wanted them--ahead by 21 points. Fortunately, USC managed to overcome the lead and win the game.

Thank you, John Fox. Thank you for not transferring two years ago when you were demoted from starting quarterback. Thank you for showing there is still room in college football for team players who always try their best. Thank you for showing that heart, dedication, determination, and hard work do pay off. Thank you for ending the streak. Thank you for embodying what a true Trojan is, and should be. Thank you for making every Trojan proud to be one. Thank you, John Fox, for everything.
