Alonzo Mourning scored 17 points and Jamal Mashburn had 16 Tuesday night as the Miami Heat defeated the cold-shooting Trail Blazers, 86-76, at Portland, Ore.

The Trail Blazers were a disappointment in the matchup between two of the NBA’s best teams. Portland shot only 35% after the first quarter, when it led, 25-24.

The Trail Blazers, who beat the Heat in Miami last month, made only two of nine shots to open the fourth quarter, and Miami slowly pulled away from a 67-65 lead. A three-point basket by Voshon Lenard made it 78-68 with 4:09 left, and Portland couldn’t get closer than six the rest of the way.

Indiana 83, San Antonio 77--Reggie Miller saved his best for last, scoring 12 of his 23 points in the fourth quarter at Indianapolis as the Pacers handed the Spurs their third consecutive loss.

Indiana, held without a field goal for an eight-minute span of the second half, posted its fourth consecutive victory despite shooting only 36% from the field.

Tim Duncan had 30 points and 12 rebounds for the Spurs.

New York 89, Golden State 83--In his second game against former coach P.J. Carlesimo, Latrell Sprewell kept John Starks from feeling at home in his return to New York by scoring many of his 21 points against him in helping hand the Warriors their 10th consecutive loss.

Starks, returning to the city where he played for eight seasons after being involved in the Sprewell trade, blew kisses to the crowd as they gave him a 10-second standing ovation upon being introduced. But that was one of the few warm moments for Starks, who missed his first four shots and his final five in finishing with seven points on three-for-12 shooting.

Vancouver 104, Dallas 95--The Grizzlies snapped a 30-game road losing streak, beating the Mavericks behind Shareef Abdur-Rahim’s 26 points and 15 rebounds.

Vancouver, also ending an overall 11-game losing streak, won on the road for the first time since beating the Clippers in double overtime on Feb. 16, 1999.

Brevin Knight led the Cavaliers with 20 points and 11 assists.

Phoenix 110, Orlando 107--Jason Kidd scored 17 of his season-high 29 points in the final 7:02 to help the Suns overcome a six-point deficit in the final 2:20 at Phoenix.

The Suns’ Penny Hardaway did not play against his old team because of a sore right foot.
