Lemieux Helps Devils Defeat Penguins, 2-1

The New Jersey Devils, knocked out of the playoffs in the first round last year by the Pittsburgh Penguins, got a touch of revenge Tuesday night at East Rutherford, N.J., as Claude Lemieux set up goals by John Madden and Randy McKay to lead the Devils to a 2-1 victory.

Carolina 4, St. Louis 2--Jeff O’Neill had two goals and an assist to lead the Hurricanes to their first win in St Louis in more than eight years.

Washington 4, New York Islanders 2--Even with leading scorer Peter Bondra sidelined because of a torn knee ligament, the Capitals had little trouble beating the Islanders at Washington.

Washington is unbeaten against the Islanders in 13 games.

Calgary 3, Montreal 3--Martin Rucinsky scored twice in the second period as the Canadiens ended a three-game losing streak with a tie against the Flames at Montreal.

The Boston Bruins signed Marty McSorley, 36, to a one-year contract. McSorley, third in NHL history in penalty minutes, was an unrestricted free agent who spent last season with the Edmonton Oilers, his second stint with that club. McSorley joined the Kings as part of the Wayne Gretzky trade in 1988. . . . Calgary defenseman Denis Gauthier was suspended for two games by the NHL for an elbow to the head of New York Ranger forward Tim Taylor Monday night.
