Una Belsey Bignell, a retired laboratory technician, died Friday at the Venturan Convalescent Center. She was 90.

Bignell was born July 23, 1909, in Los Angeles, where she spent her formative years, eventually attending Belmont High School. She moved with her family to Ventura in 1930.

After becoming a licensed laboratory technician, Bignell worked for the Ventura County Health Department. Later, she worked for Ross-Loos Medical Clinic in Pasadena.

In 1933, she married Bob Bignell. They lived in Burbank and Altadena before returning to Ventura in 1973.

Bignell was a member of St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in Ventura. During the 1930s, she and her husband belonged to the church’s Young Peoples Fellowship. More recently, she and her friends in the Episcopal Church Women’s group and Bible study group enjoyed making “urchins” for the St. Paul’s Christmas Bazaar.

Bignell was an avid gardener, loved classical music and walking her Welsh Corgi, Winston.

She is survived by her sister, Marjorie Belsey Rogers, who was her roommate at the Venturan Convalescent Center.

Bignell was preceded in death by her husband of 52 years; sister Beatrice Belsey Matthews and brother Douglas Belsey.

A memorial service is scheduled at 11 a.m. Thursday at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, with the Rev. Jerome E. Kahler officiating.

Donations in Bignell’s name can be made to the building fund at St. Paul’s.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Joseph P. Reardon Funeral Home in Ventura.
