Assemblywoman Marilyn C. Brewer (R-Newport Beach) tonight will discuss the state’s method of funding education and legislation that could affect the Irvine Unified School District. Brewer will address the issues at a meeting of the Community Advisory Committee for Gifted and Talented Education.

District officials have lamented the lack of state funding for years, blaming inadequate income for current financial problems.

California school districts receive a set amount of state money for each student in their schools. This so-called revenue limit varies for rural or urban areas; Irvine’s funding level was set in the early 1970s, when the city was still largely rural. While the city has boomed and many high-tech businesses have given it an urban environment, the state funding for schools remains at the rural levels. This leaves the school district with $100 less per student than the state average.

Irvine trustees face making $4 million in budget cuts and may put a parcel tax measure on the April ballot, despite the failure of a similar measure in November.

The meeting will take place at 7 p.m. at the Irvine High School Theater, 4321 Walnut Ave.
