Magnet Schools Brochures on Way

TIMES STAFF WRITER

Application brochures for the Los Angeles Unified School District’s magnet schools and centers or the Permits With Transportation program for the 2000-2001 school year will soon be in the mail.

Information about the district’s 150 magnet programs will be sent during the last two weeks of December to the parents of all students currently enrolled in kindergarten through 11th grade. Applications must be received or postmarked by Jan. 28.

Students currently enrolled in magnet or PWT programs do not need to reapply if they wish to remain in the same program. However, those who want to change to another school or program must send in a new application.

Students in the PWT program are transported to a school outside their area as part of the district’s voluntary integration program.

Parents will be notified in late February or early March that their application has been received and will learn of their children’s acceptance or waiting-list status by early May.

As many as 70,000 applications are expected for an estimated 14,000 openings.

Families who do not receive the “Choices 2000-2001” brochure in December should call their child’s school immediately after the winter break in January. Families whose children currently attend private school within LAUSD boundaries can pick up a copy at their nearest public school or public library.
