Gilbert Sunderland Jackson, a retired Santa Paula veterinarian, died Thursday. He was 81.

Jackson was born June 9, 1918, on his family’s farm in Green Mountain, Iowa. He was the only child of Bert and Grace Jackson. In the early 1920s, the family moved to Santa Monica and later to Altadena.

Jackson graduated from John Muir High School and Iowa State University, where he earned a degree in veterinary medicine in 1943.

Jackson served in the Merchant Marine during World War II and married Florence Madsen in 1946.

He practiced animal medicine in northern Minnesota before moving to Santa Paula in 1950, where he set up his Mupu Trail Veterinary Clinic.

At his practice, Jackson cared for large and small animals and served many large ranches in the Santa Clara Valley, including Camulos, Rancho Sespe, Percy and Hopper Mountain. He also treated animals at Stanton Ranch on Santa Cruz Island. Jackson retired in 1995.

He served on the Santa Paula Union High School board and was a member of the Santa Paula Rotary Club, Physicians for Social Responsibility, the Heifer Project International and the U.S. Surfing Assn.

He enjoyed surfing, sailing, fishing and hiking and was a volunteer for Meals on Wheels.

Jackson is survived by his wife and sons Tom of Carpinteria, Doug of Belgium, Brant of Santa Paula and Matt of Carpinteria; a daughter, Susan of Carpinteria; and seven grandchildren.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Heifer Project International, Santa Paula Memorial Hospital or Meals on Wheels.

Services will be at 7 p.m. Tuesday at Santa Paula Unitarian Church. Pierce Bros. Stetler Mortuary in Santa Paula is handling the arrangements.
