Gay Club, Prop. 22

* There could be no more compelling evidence of the need for the Gay-Straight Alliance at El Modena High School (Dec. 9) than the appalling ignorance and spitefulness displayed by opponents of the club, as well as the harassment, intimidation and physical violence to which Anthony Colin has been subjected.

The trustees’ decision to bar recognition of the club was illegal. Public schools are for all students, including those whom others may not like. By placing a higher priority on accommodating prejudice than on protecting the rights and welfare of gay students, the trustees have demonstrated that they are morally unfit to run a school district. Shame on them.

* How many more young gay people have to commit suicide or become the victims of heinous crimes for parents to see that an intolerant world damages lives and destroys families? Does it take a tragedy for some parents to realize that the very targets of their hate could be their own kids?

* If we are going to allow gay student clubs, then I guess we are also going to have to have clubs for sadomasochists, heterosexuals and any other sexual-preference groups there are. It would only be fair.

* I wonder if the far right’s problem with a gay-straight alliance is the world “alliance.” Granted, “alliance” implies that the gay students will get together with the heterosexual ones and stand for something. Maybe these kids are on to something. If all of us do-unto-others gay people and all us do-unto-others straight people got together to defend ourselves against the treat-the-different-ones-like-filth people, we’d all be better off.

* So the cast members of the “Will & Grace” sitcom decide to hit the airwaves in an attempt to convince California voters to vote against Prop. 22 (Dec. 8). As a Latina, I wonder why they don’t do the same to protest the significant lack of ethnic minorities on all major networks. There are more gay roles in prime time television than roles of ethnic minorities.

I am puzzled as to how the cast members of the “Will & Grace” sitcom believe that a proposition that simply states that only the marriage between a man and a woman is valid or recognized in California causes discrimination against gays. There is absolutely nothing homophobic about desiring to maintain traditional family values. Political correctness aside, for religious and moral reasons I cannot deem same-sex marriages as acceptable.

* I believe that the initiative to prevent gay people from marrying is misguided and mean-spirited. Gay people are pro-family. They take care of aging parents and look to their families to give and receive support, just as straight people do. They should have the opportunity to form the close ties of marriage that nongays are allowed. Social stability comes from people forming loving relationships and taking care of each other. Don’t we want to encourage that?

God made all people, gay and straight. I don’t believe that any human beings were intended by God to be second-class citizens.
