A World War II veteran who has started a letter-writing campaign urging Congress to turn part of the closed El Toro Marine Corps Air Station into a memorial cemetery will speak to a local veterans group next month.

Alan Morton, 75 of Fullerton will attend the Jan. 13 meeting of the Santa Ana-based Veterans Advisory Council to discuss how the council can lobby for the cemetery. Morton is championing some 700 acres of El Toro to be the final resting place for Orange County veterans of World Wars I, II and the Korean, Vietnam and Gulf wars.

The Veterans Advisory Council is the group that has submitted a five-page proposal to the Orange County Board of Supervisors calling for a veterans memorial park at El Toro. Although no cemetery is included in their plans, advisory council members said they might amend their proposal to include a cemetery. The Veterans Advisory Council will meet at 7 p.m. Jan. 13 at 1300 S. Grand Ave. Building B, second floor, in Santa Ana. Information: (714) 567-5017.
