A land swap with the California State Parks Department could be the solution to the Laguna Beach Unified School District’s shortage of recreational space.

The school district is offering the state 33 acres between Crystal Cove State Park and the San Joaquin Transportation Corridor in exchange for 11 acres of state-owned land next to El Morro Elementary School.

The 33 acres are being transferred to the school district by the Irvine Co. as compensation for additional students from the Newport Coast development, soon to be under construction.

The district wants to build two soccer fields and one baseball field on the land to alleviate the shortage of athletic fields at all four schools in the district. The state is proposing to use the land as a natural habitat area for wildlife.
