The former treasurer of two school music booster clubs was jailed Wednesday on suspicion of stealing $43,900 from club accounts, authorities said.

Robert Wilson, 52, of Newbury Park was being held in lieu of $10,000 bail for allegedly stealing the funds between January 1996 and October 1998, authorities said.

Wilson was treasurer for the booster clubs at Newbury Park High School and Sequoia Middle School from 1993 through 1998. Both are nonprofit groups made up of parent volunteers who raise money for school band and music programs.

The clubs were audited earlier this year by the Conejo Valley Unified School District, whose officials discovered $34,000 that could not be accounted for and called authorities.

The audit was conducted after a new board member of the Sequoia Band Boosters reviewed the financial records and discovered numerous discrepancies, authorities said.

Ventura County Sheriff’s Det. Mike Christensen said $37,000 was missing from the Panther Band Parents at Newbury Park High and at least $6,900 from the Sequoia Band Boosters.

Wilson was arrested after turning himself in at the sheriff’s station in Thousand Oaks. He was jailed on suspicion of grand theft.
