The City Council unanimously elected Ingrid McGuire, who had been the mayor pro tem, to serve a one-year term as mayor.
Wayne Rayfield edged fellow Councilman Harold Kaufman 3 to 2 to be named mayor pro tem.
McGuire was elated upon taking the center seat and praised outgoing Mayor Ruby Netzley in her acceptance speech.
“It occurred to me that the irony of this job is when you’ve learned all there is to learn and know all there is to know and can perform flawlessly is when you step down,” she said. “I’m at the beginning of a learning curve, and I hope to get it right soon, so please be patient with me.”
