The phrase, “Mas cerveza, por favor!” is missing, but some things apparently are a given for tourists in Baja, so we can forgive the map makers for this omission in their translation section.

Baja Directions of San Diego still managed to produce a colorful and informative series of maps, designed mostly for fishermen but with enough general information to interest even casual Baja travelers.

How many know, for example, that Cabo San Lucas is not only the striped marlin capital of the world, but a former provisioning port for pirates preying on Spanish Galleons? They no doubt baited a marlin or two between ambushes.

Each waterproof and tear-proof, folding, book-sized map--there also are versions profiling Ensenada, San Quintin, San Felipe, Bahia de los Angeles, Mulege, Loreto, Bahia Magdalena, La Paz and the East Cape--contains a brief history of the area with which it deals.

There also are hotel phone numbers, restaurant recommendations and directions to everything from gas stations to hospitals--even the funky zoo in Santiago can be found on the Cabo map.

But the maps are geared toward fishermen. There are detailed descriptions (with photos) of all the target species, including information on when they bite and what they bite on. Foremost, GPS coordinates and depth readings are provided for all the hot spots, as are shore reference points.

If there is a drawback to the maps, it’s that the vast majority of tourists do not own their own boats and hire local captains, who already know where they’re going. Locals usually know best and are going to take you where they want regardless of what you might show them on a map.

In these cases, the best course of action might be merely to crack open a beer and enjoy the ride.
