Hicks Leads Wake Forest

Broderick Hicks scored 12 points, including four free throws in the final 31 seconds, as 23rd-ranked Wake Forest defeated cold-shooting Arkansas, 70-64, at Fayetteville, Ark., on Monday night.

The Demon Deacons (8-1) never trailed after Hicks’ two free throws made the score 55-54 with 7:36 to play. His two points with 31 seconds left pushed the lead to 68-64 and he added two more foul shots to close out the scoring.

He was seven of eight from the line, while Arkansas (6-3) made only 10 of 21 free throws. And the Demon Deacons had a 50-33 rebounding edge.

“What’s sad is looking at the rebounding and free throw statistics,” Arkansas Coach Nolan Richardson said. “As little as we are, we have to be around 70% from the free throw line against a team as good as Wake Forest.”

No. 7 Auburn 109, Puerto Rico-Mayaguez 52--Reserve guard Marquis Daniels scored 16 points on seven-of-eight shooting and the Tigers cruised to victory over the host Bulldogs (0-6) in the opening round of the San Juan Shootout at Mario Morales Coliseum.

Auburn (8-1) extended its winning streak to six games and will play Virginia Tech, which defeated Illinois State, 79-71, in a semifinal today.

UC Santa Barbara 72, Concordia 65--Adama Ndiaye scored 12 points and had 16 rebounds to lead the Gauchos (2-5) over the Cavaliers (5-4) at Santa Barbara.

Washington State 68, Portland State 62--Chris Crosby and Mike Bush each had 15 points to rally the Cougars (5-3) past the Vikings (6-3) at Portland, Ore.

Oregon State 83, Wyoming 77--Jason Heide and Deaundra Tanner each scored 21 points at Corvallis, Ore., as the Beavers (7-2) held the Cowboys (6-4) to 10.2 points below their average.

Stanford, off to an 8-0 start, is No. 1 in the AP college basketball poll for the first time in school history. The Cardinal’s highest previous ranking was last week’s No. 2. Georgia Schweitzer scored 15 points for No. 17 Duke (9-1) in an 81-45 victory over Sacramento State (2-6) in the Bahamas Sunshine Shootout at Nassau. . . . Lucienne Berthieu scored 19 points to lead No. 20 Old Dominion (7-1) to an 86-59 victory over Vermont (8-20) at Norfolk, Va. . . .
