SPECIAL TO THE TIMES

A Costa Mesa man suspected of drunk driving was arrested after a crash at a Fountain Valley intersection in which two people were fatally injured and a 5-month-old child was critically hurt, police said.

Fountain Valley Police Sgt. Jim Perry gave this account:

Two vehicles collided at Newhope Street and Warner Avenue when one of the drivers ran a red light. The man arrested--Agustin Galindo, 42--was driving a Chevrolet pickup south on Newhope Street about 10:38 p.m. Monday. The other vehicle, a Ford Mustang driven by 24-year-old Nestor Rameriz Suastegui and carrying four passengers--all five from Huntington Beach--was traveling east on Warner Avenue.

Immediately after the crash, Galindo tried to flee on foot but was apprehended nearby.

Suastegui and one passenger, Maria Reyna Cano, 28, were pronounced dead at the scene. Cano’s infant son, Brian, was thrown from his child safety seat onto the street. He was in critical condition Tuesday at a hospital. The child’s father, Cei Muyorido, 27, also was a passenger in the Mustang. He remained hospitalized Tuesday in stable condition. The fourth passenger, Jesus Rameriz, 22, was treated for minor injuries at a hospital and released.

Perry said all the passengers in the Mustang appeared to have been wearing seat belts.

Galindo was charged with vehicular manslaughter, felony drunk driving and felony hit and run, Perry said. Police asked that anyone with information about the accident call (714) 593-4485.
