Eucharist Offered at Church Today

* St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in Ventura will hold a Holy Eucharist at 9 a.m. today and at 8 and 10:15 a.m. Sunday.

Child care will be available.

First Sunday After the Holiday * The United Methodist Church in Simi Valley will celebrate the first Sunday after Christmas during 8 and 10 a.m. services with the Rev. David Burgeson’s message, “Letting the Son Shine In.” He will focus on the scripture found in John 1:1-5.

Child care will be provided. Communion will be celebrated at 8 a.m. School for all ages begins at 9 a.m. A Spanish-language service will be in the sanctuary at 1:30 p.m.

‘Day After Christmas’ Gathering * The Unitarian Universalist Church of Ventura will hold a special “Day After Christmas” service Sunday. The service will explore and celebrate gift-giving and why it is better to give than receive. Services will be held at 9:15 and 11 a.m. and child care will be available.

Informal Communion Service * Worship celebration on the First Sunday after Christmas begins at 10:15 a.m. at St. Paul’s United Methodist Church in Oxnard.

There will be a simple communion service with the singing of Christmas carols and the sharing of Christmas stories.

As is the custom on communion Sundays, the children will not leave to go to their Sunday school classrooms but will attend the entire worship service.

Those attending are encouraged to dress casually for the informal service.

The Spanish-language ministry Sunday school will be at 1 p.m. and the Spanish-language worship service, led by the Rev. Carlos Saavedra, will be at 8 p.m. The Japanese-language ministry’s service will be at 2 p.m.

Shabbat Dinner on New Year’s Eve * Temple Etz Chaim in Thousand Oaks will hold a special Shabbat dinner at 6:30 p.m. Friday.

During the kosher dinner, Cantor Steve Cohen will lead everyone in Zemmirot, cheerful Shabbat songs.

After the dinner, Rabbi Shimon Paskow and Cohen will officiate the traditional Friday evening services at 8:15.

After services, the Sisterhood will sponsor a special Oneg Shabbat.

Temple Etz Chaim is accepting reservations for the dinner. The cost is $15 for adults and $7.50 for children 12 and younger.

Regular Shabbat morning services will be at 10 a.m. on Jan. 1.

The reading from the Bible for this weekend is the beginning of the second of the Five Books of Moses, which states, “These are the names of the children of Israel.”

For those who were not given a Jewish name, Paskow is designating the Friday evening and Jan. 1 morning services as a good time to acquire one. Anyone interested in a Hebrew name is welcome to call Paskow at the temple.

Some common Hebrew names for men are Aaron, Adam, Daniel, David, Jeremy, Joel, Joseph, Matthew and Michael. For women, some common names are Beth, Diane, Hannah, Rachel, Rebecca, Sarah and Susan.
