PROFESSION: Los Angeles school board member representing much of the East Valley and an executive consultant for IBM. Also president of Hollygrove, a home for abused and neglected children in Hollywood.

LATEST ACCOMPLISHMENTS: Young described her biggest accomplishment as giving birth to Roxanne Sonnet on Aug. 28. She also prides herself on making time to attend preschool functions for Alexandra, her 3-year-old daughter. “I love them and enjoy spending time with them,” Young said. Young also cited the “tough” management decisions she has made as a school board member in 1999, including selecting a new interim superintendent and chief operating officer for the LAUSD and suspending construction at the environmentally plagued Belmont Learning Complex near downtown.

GOALS FOR 2000: Articulate a vision for what our schools must become for our kids to succeed in the Information Age; reform the 1/8school district 3/8 management; ensure resources are focused on the school sites; recruit a world-class superintendent; build schools and fix up the ones we’ve got; find a way to recruit and keep top talent for our schools; expand implementation of proven reading, math and arts curricula.
