Diane Caston; Former Schoolteacher

Diane Caston, a former school teacher in the Conejo Valley Unified School District, died Saturday. She was 70.

Caston was born Sept. 11, 1929, in San Francisco. Her family moved to Vallejo shortly thereafter.

Caston received her bachelor’s degree from UCLA in 1952, and her teaching credential from San Diego State in 1958.

She taught for 20 years in the Conejo Valley Unified School District, primarily as a substitute teacher in third, fourth and fifth grades. For a time, she held a permanent position at Meadows Elementary School.

Caston, who lived in Santa Rosa Valley, was active in the Thousand Oaks 4-H Club and served on the board of the Ventura County Fair.

She loved horses and raised lambs on her family’s 100-acre farm in Santa Rosa Valley.

Caston is survived by her husband of 45 years, Dr. Homer T. Caston, a retired veterinarian at the De Anza Animal Clinic, and two daughters, Carolyn and Amy, both of Santa Rosa Valley.

Caston, who suffered from Alzheimer’s disease, died at a hospice in the San Fernando Valley.

Services are scheduled for 2 p.m. Thursday at the Ascension Lutheran Church.

Arrangements are under the direction Pierce Bros. Valley Oaks Mortuary.
