Moorpark schools Supt. Tom Duffy has announced his plan to resign to move to Sacramento, where he will take a job as a state lobbyist for education legislation.

Duffy, who was responsible for many of the schools built since he took office as assistant superintendent of Moorpark Unified School District in 1985, has earned a reputation for the money he brought into the district from the state.

“Mr. Duffy’s resignation represents a significant loss to the district,” said Moorpark Mayor Pat Hunter.

Duffy was on vacation and unavailable for comment.

School board member David Pollock focused on the positive aspect of Duffy’s decision.

“I know of his work at the state level. It’s like I told him: We aren’t losing a superintendent, we’re gaining a friend in Sacramento,” Pollock said.

Despite Duffy’s acclaimed lobbying efforts, some residents are eager to see a change.

“I’m excited to see some new blood in the district,” said Connie Guswa, clerical technician for Mesa Verde Middle School. “He’s a great lobbyist, but I would like to see a different type of administration. There is always room for growth.”

Duffy plans to leave the district this spring.

The board’s personnel committee will conduct the search for a qualified candidate to replace him.

“I would expect to have someone in before the summer,” Pollock said.
