Police Capt. John Schaeffer said he believes the city is in “even better shape” than the early optimistic reports he gave in November about Y2K preparedness. All back-up power systems for the police department and city services are in place, he said.

The cancellation of a street fair in Long Beach has reduced the likelihood of having to provide mutual aid, Schaeffer said. Plans by a Seal Beach business for a private celebration also were dropped, he said.

Local merchants have taken additional security measures. “Business owners and Main Street merchants understand our concerns,” he said.
