Trojans Feel Agony of the Feet

The Trojans’ 95-86 loss at Washington State on Saturday could be measured by more than just points. It could be measured in feet.

“We didn’t move our feet on defense,” Coach Henry Bibby said.

Too often, USC players were caught out of position. That allowed Washington State to get to the basket which, in turn, opened up other parts of the Cougar offense.

“We weren’t really able to stop the penetration,” USC forward Greg Lakey said. “They penetrate, kick [the ball] out and that’s an open shot.”

Given good looks at the basket, Washington State guard Jan-Michael Thomas made five three-point shots. Forward Kojo Mensah-Bonsu scored often from medium range, making seven of 12 shots.

“We got off to a great start by shooting the ball really well,” Washington State Coach Kevin Eastman said. “We got good production from just about everyone, from starters all the way down the bench.”

That added up to more points than the Cougars had ever scored against USC. They made 10 of 20 three-point shots and 33 of 39 free throws.

Bibby said a lack of movement led to many of the Trojans’ 32 fouls.

“We were reaching [on defense],” Bibby said. “We just waited too long to start playing.”

Coming up: Oregon State on Thursday, Oregon on Saturday.
