Many Mansions to Handle Car Program

Thousand Oaks-based Many Mansions, a private nonprofit organization that helps provide affordable housing to low-income people, will take over the county’s welfare-to-work car loan program, Ventura County supervisors unanimously decided Tuesday.

The pilot program was launched a year ago to help move welfare recipients into self-sufficiency. In establishing the program, the county set aside $7,000 to guarantee car loans to three local CalWORKs participants.

The three single mothers who were selected have not missed car payments. Declared a success, the program will be run by Many Mansions, but the county will pitch in $300 for any new loan that defaults within a transitional period of about three years.

“I’d like to point out that this didn’t cost the county anything,” said Supervisor Frank Schillo, who helped spearhead the program.

Added Supervisor Judy Mikels: “The most important thing is that we’re keeping our promise to hand the program off.”
