Poly Forces Reseda to Take Its Medicine

It was Poly High that was wracked with flu Wednesday, but it was Reseda that left their Valley Pac-8 Conference boys’ soccer match with a sick feeling after being upset, 2-1, at Reseda.

Miguel Luquin, playing with a fever, scored the decisive goal 13 minutes into the second half after Erick Calvillo’s corner kick bounced off the hands of goalkeeper Franklin Ascencio of Reseda.

Soccer--The score of a Valley Pac-8 Conference boys’ soccer game Wednesday between Reseda and Poly was reported incorrectly Thursday. The teams tied, 2-2. A goal by Oscar Sims put Reseda ahead, 2-1, 10 minutes into the second half. A goal by Miguel Luquin of Poly three minutes later tied the score. Poly is 4-2-5 overall and in conference play. Reseda (17-3-2, 8-1-2) plays at conference co-leader Monroe (8-1-2) at 2:30 p.m. today.

The Parrots (5-2-4, 5-2-4 in conference play), fell back in a defensive posture and withstood an onslaught by the Regents, who held a 23-10 shot advantage.

Lalo Tovar, the Parrots’ midfielder, was not well enough to start, but sparked the team with an appearance in the 35th minute before staggering off the field with five minutes to play.

“I couldn’t breathe,” Luquin said. “I thought we were going to lose after the first half but then [Tovar] came in and we got some more energy in the midfield.”

Second-place Reseda (16-4-1, 7-2-1) fell further behind conference leader Monroe, which defeated Van Nuys. Poly is nipping at the Regents’ heels in third.

Reseda, No. 2 in The Times’ regional rankings, outshot the Parrots, 11-4 in the first half and took a 1-0 lead in the 21st minute on a goal by Kenny Zepeda.

Poly tied the game three minutes into the second half on a 40-yard free kick by Miguel Ceja.

Highland 2, Lancaster 0--Rafael Garcia’s 25th goal broke a scoreless tie in the second half and the Bulldogs (13-4-3, 5-1-1) beat the Eagles (12-4-3, 4-2-1) at Lancaster to take the Golden League lead.

GIRLS’ SOCCER

Simi Valley 1, Westlake 0--Allison Cameron scored in the 39th minute and the Pioneers (12-7-1, 6-3) won a Marmonte League game at Simi Valley.

Westlake (15-1-1, 9-1) is No. 1 in Southern Section Division II.

Notre Dame 1, Chaminade 0--Traci Adler scored in the 60th minute of a Mission League game at Notre Dame.

Sophomore goalkeeper Cheryl Acosta had 15 saves for Notre Dame (6-10-3, 1-6-1), which had managed only a tie against Chaminade (17-4-2, 6-2-1) since 1985.

Harvard-Westlake 2, Louisville 0--The Wolverines (16-3-1, 7-1) moved into first place in the Mission League on goals by Becky Rauth and India Mandelkern at Crespi.

Louisville (12-3-3, 4-3-1) remains in third place.

WRESTLING

Alemany 42, Calabasas 30--The Indians (5-0) had six pins in eight victories at Alemany to win the Frontier League dual meet title.

Weston Di Meo (38-6) recorded a pin at 189 pounds for Alemany and Ricardo Garcia (37-6) registered a pin at 160.

Freshman Ricardo Ibarra went 5-0 in league at 103 and Matt Gray (112) won by pin to improve to 4-1 for Calabasas (5-3, 4-1).
