Bill Seeks to End State Control of School District

Share

Assemblyman Carl Washington introduced a bill in Sacramento on Thursday that would return the state-run Compton Unified School District to local control by July 1.

Washington’s initiative comes after a report issued Monday by a team of outside consultants that established a recovery plan for the district and also painted a bleak picture of progress under state receivership. But the bill also runs counter to the report’s suggestion that the district meet improvement standards before reverting back to local control.

Angelo Williams, a spokesman for Washington (D-Paramount), said that the consultants’ plan could be more effectively implemented if the state hands back control of Compton schools and ends the political infighting that has beset the district in recent years.
