With red fire ants found at eight sites throughout the city, the City Council this week voted to take immediate steps to get rid of the infestation. The ants have been found generally around the Santa Ana River bed, because the ants need water to survive, city officials said.

The city will start its own eradication efforts rather than wait for state or county action, said Councilman Tom Tait, who brought the issue up for discussion. City officials also agreed to send a letter in support of any state or county control measures, and city staff will assist in getting information to the public regarding the fire ant problem.

Fire ants’ aggressive behavior can present hazards to people, plants, native wildlife and city infrastructure, officials said. (Related story, B4)
