Attorneys for the city filed a lawsuit against the Los Alamitos Unified School District last week, charging that district officials failed to conduct adequate environmental studies for a new high school.

The dispute over plans to build an $18-million complex for the Orange County High School of the Arts on Bloomfield Street has drawn hundreds of protesters and supporters. Students in the award-winning arts program now take classes at Los Alamitos High School, Cal State Long Beach and other locations.

The suit, filed in Orange County Superior Court, alleges that the district bypassed the state-mandated environmental review process. The city will be asking for a restraining order.

Ralph S. Opacic, executive director of the arts program, said the district is confident it will prevail in court.
