Villa Park Pool Vandals Confess

Three high school students responsible for dumping used motor oil in the pool at Villa Park High confessed to the vandalism and have been suspended from school, said Judy Frutig, spokeswoman for the Orange Unified School District, Monday.

The students, who were not identified because they are minors, turned themselves in last Friday by sending letters to Villa Park Principal Fran Roney. A district placement hearing today before a three-member disciplinary committee will determine if there is to be any further punishment for the Jan. 22 incident.

Damages to the pool are estimated at about $5,000.

“Besides punishment we are seeking full [financial] restitution,” Frutig said.

The Orange County Sheriff’s Dept. is conducting a criminal investigation.

“Three individuals have been identified in the incident,” said Lt. Hector Rivera, spokesman for the Orange County Sheriff’s Dept., “but charges have not yet been filed on anyone yet.”

The pool was reopened Friday, well ahead of schedule, after crews drained 320,000 gallons of water, replaced filters and cleaned miscellaneous parts.
