COSTA MESA

The City Council has approved an ordinance giving waste haulers more time to fix violations when they are in danger of losing their operating permits. According to state law, each city must divert 50% of its solid waste from landfills by 2000. To comply, Costa Mesa adopted an ordinance that would allow it to monitor and regulate waste haulers through a licensing and permitting process. If a waste hauler violates certain conditions, it risks having its permit revoked.

The ordinance adopted last week will give haulers 100 days to comply rather than the previous 10 to 15 days. A meeting with waste haulers in March will address additional concerns.
