Law enforcement authorities have reported a 13% decrease in violent crimes and a 9% decrease in nonviolent crimes, the second year in a row with a drop, according to statistics released by the Orange County Sheriff’s Department.

In 1997, 813 serious crimes--such as rape, murder and robbery--were reported in the city. In 1998, that figure dropped to 702. There were 1,250 nonviolent crimes--including drunk driving and weapons violations--reported in 1997 and 1,136 in 1998.

San Juan Capistrano Police Services Lt. Bill Leonard said he attributes the drop to partnerships developed with community groups such as the Boys & Girls Club and the San Juan Community Task Force, which gets children off the streets.
