Birmingham Sets Up Showdown

Krissie Oakes scored two goals, raising her season total to 30, and helped Birmingham High defeat Cleveland, 3-0, in a West Valley League girls’ soccer game Tuesday at Cleveland.

The Patriots (10-3-4, 8-0-3 in league play) clinched at least second place and have a shot to win their third consecutive league title.

Goalkeeper Paula Eckstein stopped two shots and recorded her ninth shutout for Birmingham, which will host Sherman Oaks CES today at 2:30 p.m. in a showdown for first place.

In other girls’ soccer games:

Quartz Hill 2, Lancaster 0--Julie Gold scored two goals and the Rebels (14-4-3, 9-0) clinched their second consecutive Golden League championship at Lancaster.

Shannon Murray assisted on Gold’s first goal in the 15th minute, and Kellie Cox assisted on the second goal in the 55th minute.

Quartz Hill, which as won three of the last four Golden titles, will close out the regular season Thursday by hosting Littlerock.

North Hollywood 3, Sylmar 0--Charlotte Walker, Erin Wade and Dayana Lopez scored for the Huskies (9-3, 7-2) in a Mid-Valley League game at Sylmar.

GIRLS’ WATER POLO

Crescenta Valley 9, Glendale 8--Melanie Brunton and Kate Freudenberg each scored three goals for the Falcons (13-3, 6-0) in a first-round victory in the Pacific League tournament at Arcadia High.

Megan Scott scored five goals for Glendale.

Harvard-Westlake 16, Notre Dame 2--Samantha Witter scored four goals and Liz Blase had three to help the Wolverines (19-1, 9-0) win their third consecutive Mission League title at Harvard-Westlake.
