Turntable Talent Takes Spin in L.A.
Hip-hop fans whose heads are still spinning from 1997’s Deep Concentration Tour stop in L.A. have a chance to get another fix of top-notch turntable talent when its sequel--the Deeper Concentration Tour--arrives Saturday at the Hollywood Athletic Club.
DJ artists include Cut Chemist, of the bands Ozomatli and Jurassic 5, and the Beat Junkies, the local collective that has dominated the International Turntablist Federation competition for two years running.
The anticipated Saturday night show will also feature Eddie Def, Vinroc, Dusk, Sesqui, Apolo & J Boogie and Ming & FS.
People are still talking about Cut Chemist’s frenzied yet controlled performance at the last Deep Concentration, when he raced to and fro among a multitude of turntables. At Deeper Concentration, fans can look forward to delving further into vinyl-scratching and beat-juggling during an evening designed for true turntable pyrotechnics.
The concert comes on the heels of the independent Om Records release of the “Deeper Concentration” compilation album, a follow-up to the acclaimed 1996 “Deep Concentration” anthology. In addition to the artists performing Saturday, the new CD showcases DJ Spooky, the Scratch Perverts and the Invisibl Skratch Piklz’ Mix Master Mike.
