Newbury Park, Schmidt Get Their Points

Share

Casey Schmidt had three goals and an assist, lifting Newbury Park High to a 4-0 victory over Moorpark and the Marmonte League boys’ soccer title Friday at Newbury Park.

The Panthers (12-5-6, 7-1-4 in league play), needed a victory or its equivalent three points in their final three regular season games to clinch their first title, but were tied by Royal and routed by Simi Valley.

Schmidt has 17 goals and four assists, but none finer than his effort with two minutes left in the first half.

Schmidt beat a defender down the left side and moved into traffic along the end line, where he beat another Musketeer before faking a shot and passing to Chris Williams in the center of the penalty area.

Williams misplayed the ball but it bounded out to a charging Brian White, who drilled the ball high into the left side of the net for his fifth goal.

In the second half, Schmidt buried the Musketeers (7-9-6, 2-5-5) by converting a penalty shot and scoring after corner kicks by Mike Falcone and Christian Guardado.

“We were so nervous,” Schmidt said. “The pressure was all on us. We’d had three games to get it done and it was beginning to get hairy.”
