Sen. John McCain, fresh from voting for the Republicans’ failed effort to convict President Clinton on impeachment articles, told a gathering Saturday of party moderates that the GOP must move on to important issues.

“We Republicans have a great deal of work to do to remind voters that we are not simply the anti-Clinton party,” said the Arizona Republican. He cited education as one priority. “I believe the American people understand very well what we stood against. We now need to remind them what we stand for.”

McCain was the keynote speaker Saturday night at the Republican Leadership Council’s winter meeting. The group is an organization of moderate Republicans.
