Cross-Country Skier Hit by Train, Killed
A cross-country skier was struck and killed by a train Sunday in the Sierra Nevada about 25 miles west of Truckee.
Frank Olrich, 55, of Auburn was skiing with his wife when he apparently slipped on Union Pacific Railroad tracks or was hooked by the train about 1:45 p.m., said Placer County sheriff’s Lt. Larry Webber. He fell and died instantly.
Olrich’s wife managed to climb a snowy embankment and escaped the train.
Train personnel told authorities they saw Olrich on the tracks and blew the whistle, but were unable to stop in time.
