Cal State Northridge is trying to schedule a football game at Kansas next season, Matador Coach Ron Ponciano said.

“We would love to go back there and play,” Ponciano said.

Northridge wants to get out of the season opener at Southern Utah on Sept. 4 and it has a bye on Sept. 18.

The Matadors accused Southern Utah of using illegal chop blocking in their game on Oct. 3 at Northridge.

“We’re trying to get a [$10,000] buyout,” Ponciano said. “It’s going to cost that much to take the team there.”

Northridge would replace Southern Utah with Kansas or play the Jayhawks in Lawrence on Sept. 18. Kansas would be the second Division I-A opponent next season for the Matadors, who play at Southern Methodist on Nov. 13.

Ponciano said Aron Gideon, Northridge’s offensive line coach the last two seasons, is leaving the program to pursue a business opportunity.

Ponciano said he is interviewing three candidates with Division I-A experience to replace Gideon, a former center at UCLA.

Trevor Gray of Cal State Northridge was selected NCAA Division I Independent pitcher of the week for his performance last week against Oregon State.

Gray, a junior right-hander, allowed one unearned run in 7 1/3 innings, striking out 10 in an 8-4 victory in the series finale.
