Members of Tailwaggers Adoption Group Services will take their case to the City Council next week, hoping to win support for a no-kill animal shelter in the city. In December, the nonprofit group asked the city to support its cause. Council members directed staff to examine the feasibility of a shelter and to analyze the city’s present situation.
That report will be presented to the council at its study session at 4 p.m. Monday. Options include: a city-run shelter, estimated to cost at least $1 million to build and $250,000 per year for additional staffing, with a $100,000 increase in revenue; encouraging nonprofit community groups to build a shelter with donations or grants, and then paying the facility to provide services; sharing the costs of building and operating a shelter with another city or contracting with a city that runs its own shelter; and continuing the present contract with Dover Shores Pet Care Center.
The net cost to the city for all animal control services, including four animal control officers, is about $288,000 each year, the report said.
