Flags atop Ventura City Hall were flown at half-staff this week after the unexpected death of a well-liked municipal clerk, officials said Friday.

Sally Kennedy, 48, died Feb. 12 at her home in Ventura.

Kennedy had been on a brief leave of absence from her job as a senior accounting clerk in the city’s Treasury Department.

She had worked for the city since 1991, said Dorie Alvarez, director of volunteers for the city.

“She was a dear friend and everybody liked her,” Alvarez said.

Although the city has no official policy, Alvarez said the flags are flown at half-staff when a current or former employee dies.

Several months ago, the flags were lowered when retired city traffic engineer Omen Ross died.

In Kennedy’s case, the flags were lowered Wednesday morning and will stay at half-staff until the conclusion of a private memorial service today on a beach in Ventura.

Kennedy is survived by a teenage daughter, her mother and a brother.
