Attorney Arrested in Murder for Hire Plot

Sheriff’s deputies have arrested a San Pedro defense attorney involved in an alleged murder for hire scheme against his former law partner and a state bar prosecutor, authorities announced Friday.

Barry Post, 47, was upset over a disciplinary investigation into his conduct and hired a San Bernardino County private investigator to find someone to kill the prosecuting attorney on the case, as well as his former law partner, said Sheriff’s Det. Chris Elvert.

The alleged plot didn’t get very far. The investigator alerted San Bernardino County sheriff’s deputies in October, Elvert said.

Post was arrested Thursday at the State Bar of California offices in Los Angeles, where he was meeting with prosecutors to discuss a possible settlement to his case, said Kathleen Beitix, a spokeswoman for the state bar.

The case against him, which involves “multiple counts of failure to perform in criminal defense matters,” will proceed as scheduled Monday morning in the state bar’s courtroom in Los Angeles, she said.

Authorities declined to identify either the prosecutor or Post’s former partner.

Post was transported to West Valley Detention Center, where he was booked on murder for hire charges. Bail was set at $500,000.
