Fleury’s Record Is No Small Feat

Share

He stands only 5 feet 6 and might weigh 180 pounds after a really big meal, but few players have the heart of Theoren Fleury, Calgary’s pint-sized right wing.

With two goals and an assist Friday against the Ducks, Fleury became the franchise’s all-time leading scorer with 824 points.

The bad news for Calgary fans is that the Flames seem determined to trade him before the March 23 deadline. However, he’s not likely to be headed to the Kings--at least that’s what Tim Leiweke, the team president, said earlier this week.

Certainly, the Ducks could use a player of his skill and character.

“He seems to be a fearless competitor and that’s probably what makes him such a great player,” Coach Craig Hartsburg said.

Left wing Paul Kariya also is a big fan.

“He paved the way for a lot of smaller players to make it in the NHL,” Kariya said. “He’s not only proved he could play at his size, but he’s become one of the best players in the league.”
