George Washington--The first U.S. president is credited with a life of high ideals and leadership.

Preschoolers and kindergartners: “A Picture Book of George Washington,” by David A. Adler, illustrated by John & Alexandra Wallner.

The text simplifies the Washington story. Illustrations show colonial dress, homes and even war.

First and second grades: “George Washington: A Picture Book Biography,” by James Cross Giblin, illustrated by Michael Dooling.

Highlights include the cherry tree myth and Washington’s “Rules of Good Behavior.” Dooling’s oil paintings are impressive.

Third grade: “Buttons for General Washington,” by Peter and Connie Roop, illustrated by Peter E. Hanson.

Based on truth, this is a fictionalized account of a 14-year-old spy who sneaks secret messages to Washington during the Revolutionary War.

Fourth and fifth grades: “George Washington’s Breakfast,” by Jean Fritz, illustrated by Paul Galdone.

Loads of trivia are served up in this story of a child whose name and birthday are the same as Washington’s.
