The Fountain Valley School District Board of Trustees has unanimously approved a morning- and afternoon-track kindergarten pilot program for next year. The board reached the decision after listening to sharply divided opinions from more than a dozen kindergarten teachers and parents. The two-track system is designed to allow the 20-student-per-teacher ratio all day; currently, kindergartners are taught in smaller classes for half the day because of space limitations.
Although the board members favored the pilot program, each expressed concern about overlapping schedules because as many as 40 students could be assigned to the same classroom with two teachers on Thursdays and during transition periods between the morning and afternoon programs.
District staff will explore options to prevent the overlap. Schools will sign up to hold the pilot program through an application process.
