The Alhambra school board has approved a special election June 8 for two bond measures that would provide $73 million to upgrade and repair school campuses.

Measure A would provide $30 million to repair and replace elementary schools. Measure AA would generate $43 million to rebuild the high schools, officials said.

School district officials said improvements are needed to accommodate nearly 20,000 students in facilities that were built for fewer than 14,000 students.

“We know we have over $150 million in pressing needs. Our surveys of the community revealed a willingness to support about half of that amount,” said Supt. Richard A. Keilhacker.

District officials hope to receive some matching funds from the state.

Measure A would cost an average household $26.16 annually and Measure AA would cost $25.80, district officials said.

The Alhambra school district serves students from Alhambra and parts of Monterey Park, Rosemead and South San Gabriel.
