Mike Modano scored three goals, including the winner with 4:23 to play, and Joe Nieuwendyk got his 800th point Tuesday night as the league-leading Dallas Stars pulled out a 4-3 victory over the expansion Nashville Predators at Nashville.

The Stars trailed, 3-1, going into the third period, but a goal by Pat Verbeek and two by Modano extended their unbeaten streak to seven games.

The winner came when Modano tapped in Jere Lehtinen’s wraparound attempt for the seventh hat trick of his career and third this season.

Trevor Kidd, who lost his job as the Carolina Hurricanes’ top goaltender this season to Arturs Irbe, was signed to a multiyear contract. Terms were not announced. “Despite the fact that Trevor hasn’t played as much, I believe in his ability to be a solid NHL goaltender for our team,” said Jim Rutherford, president and general manager of the Hurricanes. “This contract is based on his performance with our club last season and on his career numbers.”
