For the second year in a row, the Angela Louise and Newport Belle stern-wheelers will have a riverboat race through Newport Harbor to raise money for the Newport Harbor Nautical Museum’s Young Mariners Program. The paddleboats--scale replicas of the 19th century riverboats made famous in the writings of Mark Twain--will churn along a half-mile course from the museum (inside the Pride of Newport) through the main channel and back, at heady speeds of almost 5 miles per hour. The boats will race in three heats: at 11:30 a.m., 12:30 and 1:30 p.m. The public is invited to ride along for the price of $10 per heat, or $25 for all three. Proceeds will help to send underprivileged students on a tour of the Endeavour, a touring replica of an 18th-century tallship that provides lessons on sailing history and marine science. Spectators can view the races for free from the decks of the Pride of Newport.
