Ray Charles, Albert Hague, Anita Nye, Renee Orin, Babbie Green and Laurie McIntosh are among actors, singers and songwriters scheduled to appear in “A Memorial Birthday Tribute to the Life & Lyrics of Marshall Barer,” presented by Parlor Performances in association with Cabaret West. There will be two different presentations of music and memories of Barer, who collaborated with Mary Rodgers on “Once Upon a Mattress,” and with Duke Ellington, Michel Legrand, Hugh Martin, David Shire and many others.

2pm: Jazz

Horace Tapscott is the soul and spirit of the Los Angeles jazz community. A pianist of striking depth and feeling and a bandleader whose various ensembles have produced globally recognized musicians, Tapscott has dedicated his life to bringing the music to the people. Now suffering from cancer, the pianist will be honored at a tribute to Horace Tapscott, a gathering of his Pan Afrikan People’s Arkestra, which will include appearances from trumpeter Clora Bryant, saxophonists Charles Owens and Michael Session, vocalist Dwight Trible, poet Kamau Daaood, the Watts Prophets and others.

Mezzo-soprano Jennifer Lane joins the SoLaRe String Trio in Da Camera Society-sponsored concerts in the Mediterranean splendor of Villa Aurora for two programs of music by Bach, Eisler, Milhaud and Francaix. The 22-room Villa Aurora was the estate of novelist Lion Feuchtwanger and his wife, Marta, who willed it to USC in 1987. Lane makes her Metropolitan Opera debut this season.

10am: Family

Craig n’ Co., one of children’s music’s top recording groups, headed by Craig Taubman, will put on a family concert of pop-rock Jewish tunes as the star attraction in the “1999 Purim UnCarnival,” which also includes games, crafts and other activities, with an emphasis on giving to loved ones and those in need.

Ali Akbar Khan is the universally recognized master of Indian classical music and the 25-string sarod. Since his first visit to the U.S. in 1955, championed by violinist Yehudi Menuhin, Khan has delighted international audiences with his technique and deeply felt expression. Here, he’ll by joined by percussionist Zakir Hussain.

The much-acclaimed Moses Hogan Chorale of New Orleans makes its first local appearance on the L.A. Master Chorale series at the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion, singing music from its specialty, the spirituals of the African American experience.
