This Time, Georgia Has the Last Laugh in Peach Bowl

This time, it was Georgia that finished off a stirring Peach Bowl comeback.

Quincy Carter accounted for three touchdowns and Olandis Gary ran for 110 yards and two scores as the No. 19 Bulldogs rallied from a 21-0 deficit, then held on to beat No. 13 Virginia, 35-33, Thursday night in Atlanta.

In the 1995 Peach Bowl against Virginia, Georgia rallied from an 18-point deficit, but lost, 34-27, on a late kickoff return.

This time, the Cavaliers (9-3) made a comeback of their own after Georgia (9-3) went ahead, 35-27, on Carter’s one-yard sneak for a touchdown with 7:01 remaining.

Aaron Brooks’ 30-yard run with 1:34 left brought Virginia to within 35-33.

The Cavaliers missed the two-point conversion but recovered an on-side kick and moved into field-goal range. Todd Braverman, who earlier missed an extra point and a 44-yard field-goal attempt, hooked his 48-yard attempt right with 19 seconds left.

Mississippi 35, Texas Tech 18--David Cutcliffe, who spent Christmas in the hospital with an inflamed pancreas, got a victory in his coaching debut, winning the Independence Bowl at Shreveport, La.

Sophomore Romaro Miller threw for three touchdown passes and 216 yards for Ole Miss (7-5). Texas Tech finished 7-5 after a 6-0 start.
