FRESHWATER

CASTAIC LAKE--Steve Forster, Canoga Park, 17 largemouth bass one day and 18 another, largest 5 1/4 pounds, on small plastics. Tom Agee, Palmdale, with guide Pat Buckley, 14 largemouth bass, 12 on crawdads. Biggest largemouth bass of the week, a seven-pounder by Rob Wilbanks, Simi Valley, on a plastic worm in the lower lake. Top catch overall, a 15-pound striped bass by Kent Collins, Northridge, on a sardine.

LAKE PIRU--Trollers are getting lots of limits of trout at the mouth of Reasoner Cove and between the pump house and dam, using mostly fire tiger-pattern Needlefish, shad- or rainbow-pattern Rapalas, and Thomas Buoyant lures. Other species are slow.

PYRAMID LAKE--The striped bass have gone deep, but some are being caught on anchovies and sardines fished at 50 feet-plus. Largemouth and smallmouth bass are being caught only sporadically, by those using dark plastics and crankbaits.

LAKE CACHUMA--Trout fishing remains steady. Trollers using lead-core line at 2-3 colors and Needlefish lures at the east end are getting some limits. Cachuma Bay-area fishermen are using mostly Power Bait and getting bigger fish. Chris Doering, Santa Barbara, 5 1/4-and 4 1/2-pound trout on Power Bait. David Sibrdia, Santa Barbara, two four-pound trout on Power Bait behind the island. Some largemouth bass.

LAKE CASITAS--The larger bass are starting to stir. A 16 1/2-pounder was caught by Jim DeClercq, Simi Valley, on a Castaic Hard Trout. Bob Baker, La Mesa, 13-pound bass on a crawdad. Top catfish, 15 1/2 pounds by Ed Guyette, Ventura, on mackerel at Santa Ana arm. Trout limits are common as well. Rainbow Power Bait and night crawlers are getting most.

SANTA ANA RIVER LAKES--More than 15 trout weighing 10 pounds or more were caught in the past week. Tops was a 13-3 by Dave Florez, Pomona, on rainbow Power Bait at the Bubble Hole.

CORONA LAKE--Even better than Santa Ana River Lakes, in terms of lunkers. Top catch, a pair of 15-1s by James Giron, Upland, on a yellow Roostertail, and Aaron Health, Fullerton, on sparkled Power Bait.

IRVINE LAKE--Trout fishing remains fair to good, with limits or near-limits common at the west shore, off Trout Island and in Woody’s Cove. An 11-pounder was caught by Lisa Spahie, Newport Beach, and there were lots of slightly smaller fish.

OSO RESERVOIR--The bass are a little deep, but the bite remains fair and has been improving. Keith Carlson, Ventura, caught and released a 6 1/2-pounder on a blue and black Power Worm. Catfish are still active, biting at 15 feet on standard catfish baits.

LAGUNA NIGUEL LAKE--Trout action has been steady but heavy pressure expected this weekend might slow it some. Biggest of the week, a nine-pounder by Greg Farnsworth, Huntington Beach, on a Power Bait-night crawler combo.

LAKE SKINNER--Most people are fishing for striped bass, but none are being caught. Try surface plugs near Ramp 2. Some catfish.

LAKE PERRIS--Trout action is fairly steady at Lots 11 and 12, with most being caught on Power Bait and mini-jigs. Largemouth bass are being caught off points on spoons, but none of the fish have been big. Catfish are being caught by campers fishing at night with mackerel.

SAN DIEGO CITY LAKES--The bass bite is picking up at El Capitan, where a six-pounder by Ed Arledge, Del Mar, tops the list. He used a spoon to catch three bass totaling 11 1/2 pounds. A 25 1/2-pound blue catfish was caught at San Vicente by Joe Bowman, Santee, on a Hopkins Spoon. Trout are being caught in good numbers at Miramar and Murray.

LAKE JENNINGS--”As fishing goes, it was a great week for bird-watching,” the weekly report says, adding that a sporadic trout bite was in progress. Large carp are moving into the shallows, for those interested in catching carp.

LAKE CUYAMACA--Trout fishing has improved from lousy to fair with the recent warm weather. Best bet is plastic worms dipped in scent. Good news for late risers: The bite doesn’t begin until about 11 a.m.
